Borthwick is a magnificent U-plan keep, built in 1430 and hardly changed (on the outside) since then. It is a clean, stark building with massive walls rising 110 foot sheer. Inside is an enormous vaulted hall with log fire to match, and a minstrels' gallery.

It is also full of history - Mary Queen of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell were besieged here in June 1567; Mary escaped out of one of the windows dressed as a servant boy and was lost for some hours in the early morning mist! The distance between the two towers on the west side is twelve foot.

The Borthwicks would release any prisoners able to leap this gap! On the east wall, the damage done by Cromwell's canons is still easy to see. Borthwick is now a hotel. If you ask, they will show you a picture of the castle ghost, a unexplained image in the Great Hall!

Exclusive Use of the Castle with Bedchambers - £5,000 per day

Check In 1.30pm - Check Out 11.00 am

This includes:

  • Ten Bedchambers - 7 Double and 3 Twin
  • Eight Bedchambers in the Castle and 2 Bedchambers in the Gatehouse.
  • Sleeps 20 people, Z beds, cots, highchairs are available on request
  • Full Scottish breakfast for all overnight guests.
  • Includes use of all Function Rooms and the garden.

Exclusive Use of the Castle without Bedchambers - Please contact us for a quotation.

Hire of the Garrison Chapel or State Room - £500 per hour

* A special room rate is available for clients making reservations for extra nights, providing that exclusive use is taken. If, in addition to the 10 bedchambers available at the castle, you require further accommodation for your guests, we will be happy to recommend nearby B&B's or hotels.

* Banqueting and other wedding services, such as photographer, flowers, church fees etc are not included in the Exclusive Use charge.
