Castle Stuart - bedrooms

Castle Stuart : Choose your bedroom

The eight rooms at Castle Stuart are named after the clans that suffered the greatest losses at the Battle of Culloden which marked the end of the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Each room is carpeted with the tartan associated with its name.

The Murray Room , also known as the Honeymoon Suite, is at the top of the east tower, overlooking the front courtyard where the unfortunate ‘Big Angus' was found. It has a king size four poster bed and separate bathroom in one of the old watchtowers at the back of the castle. The Atholl Murrays were led by Lord George Murray and fought on the right of the line at Culloden.   x
x   The MacLachlan Room or Battlement Suite, is at the top of the west tower and has a king size ‘tester' bed (which is four poster style but has only two posts!), and separate bathroom in one of the old watchtowers at the back of the castle. This room has private access to the battlements at the top of the tower. The MacLachlans fought alongside MacLeans and Raasay MacLeods in the centre of the front line at Culloden.
The MacIntosh is in the east tower and has a Queen Size Four Poster Bed and an en suite bathroom. The MacIntoshes were the largest clan in the ‘super clan' known as Clan Chattan, led at Culloden by Alexander MacGillivray of Dunmaglass.   x
x   The MacKenzie is the lowest of the room in the east tower and has a Queen Size ‘tester' bed (which is four poster style but has only two posts!) and an en suite bathroom. The MacKenzies were an intensely loyal Jacobite Clan who fought in every one of the battles from 1689 to 1745.

The Chisolm is in the east tower and has twin beds and an en suite bathroom. The Chisolms from nearby Strathglass and Glen Affric fought in the front line at Culloden.

  x
x   The Cameron is in the west tower and has twin beds and an en suite bathroom. The Camerons were the first clan to come ‘out' in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie; their chief, Cameron of Lochiel, had both ankles broken by grape-shot at Culloden but his clansmen got him off the field to safety.
The Stuart of Appin is in the west tower and has twin beds and an en suite bathroom. The Appin Stewarts stood next to the Camerons at Culloden and were led by Charles Stewart of Ardshiel.   x
x   The MacDonnell of Glengarry bedroom is in the west tower and has twin beds, one of them being an enclosed box-bed, and an en suite bathroom. The MacDonnells of Glengarry were on the left of the line and many of their casualties were caused after the battle by the Hanoverian cavalry who rode them down as they fled back to Inverness.
